Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Ending Violence and Combat in Syria is of Utmost Importance

20.11.2012

No 412-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that the European Union sees the Syrian opposition coalition as a legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people but the most important thing is to keep working to end the violence.

Paet said that the creation of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces is a positive step towards forming a transitional Syrian government. “We hope that the new coalition will be able to unite all the Syrian forces that seek a solution and do everything it can to put a stop to the violence,” he stated. “Fundamental rights and freedoms must be respected,” he added.

The Estonian foreign minister said that the UN Security Council must continue working with all its partners in order to end the violence in Syria and find a diplomatic solution. “Ending the violence and combat activities in Syria is of utmost importance right now,” he emphasised.

According to the data of human rights organisations, about 36 000 people have been killed in Syria and 2.5 million are in need of humanitarian aid. Around 362 000 Syrians have fled to neighbouring countries.

In connection with Egypt, Paet said that the first meeting of the European Union-Egypt Task Force is an important step in EU-Egypt relations. “The meeting demonstrated the political support of the European Union for the transition process in Egypt and emphasised the importance of the EU as an economic co-operation partner,” Paet explained.
