06.05.2013

Nr 150-E

Today Foreign Minister Urmas Paet met with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Enterprise Estonia, and the Estonian Employers’ Confederation to discuss opportunities to intensify co-operation between the Foreign Ministry and business organisations in protecting the interests of Estonian entrepreneurs abroad.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that one important role of Estonia’s foreign representations is supporting the activities of entrepreneurs and protecting their interests abroad. “When opening new representations, one of the things we take into account is Estonia’s economic interests. In February of this year we opened an embassy in India and in April our representation in Brazil started work,” Paet said. “The needs of entrepreneurs also play a role in the development of Estonia’s network of representations,” he added.

“The network of Estonia’s honorary consuls should also be involved more in co-operation with business organisations,” the foreign minister noted.

Paet said that co-operation between the Foreign Ministry and business organisations has been good and the two support each other’s activities. “Good co-operation and information exchange with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Enterprise Estonia, and the Estonian Employers’ Confederation is vital for a lot of our undertakings,” Foreign Minister Paet added.

Paet also highlighted co-operation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in organising business visits and receiving business delegations that visit Estonia. In co-operation with the Chamber, it has also been a tradition to hold seminars introducing various foreign markets. For successful co-operation, Paet said, it is useful for ambassadors and diplomats working with economic affairs to hold meetings with members of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Employers’ Confederation before heading to their posts abroad.

Enterprise Estonia is a vital co-operation partner for the Foreign Ministry. “In countries that have both an Estonian embassy as well as an Enterprise Estonia representation, economic activities are much stronger,” the foreign minister said. Paet also noted that in addition to practical co-operation, Estonian diplomats also share a working space with Enterprise Estonia representatives abroad.
