At his meeting in Tallinn today with Danish Minister for Trade and Investment Pia Olsen Dyhr, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet discussed international trade relations with the United States, Canada, and Japan, as well as opportunities to intensify economic co-operation between Estonia and Denmark.

In talking about European Union trade relations, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and Danish Minister for Trade Pia Olsen Dyhr focused on negotiations for trade agreements with the United States, Canada, and Japan. “For the European Union, it is essential that we continue to liberalise trade and conclude comprehensive free trade agreements. This gives entrepreneurs more security in entering new markets and doing business there,” added Foreign Minister Paet.

They also discussed matters related to the Association Agreement and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Denmark is an essential partner for Estonia in the framework of both bilateral and Nordic-Baltic co-operation, but there is room for development in economic relations. “Estonia has a great interest in the Danish market and finding co-operation partners there. Hopefully the business seminar organised by the Estonian-Danish Chamber of Commerce being held today entitled ‘Nordic Open’ will help to intensify contacts between Estonian business associations and Danish and other Scandinavian markets,” Paet stated. There is the most interest and potential to expand export to Denmark in Estonia’s wood and furniture industry, metals and machinery industry, food and beverage industry, and construction material production.

Paet said that there is also potential for co-operation in the IT sector. “Both countries have developed their e-services to a high level. We could do closer co-operation in this area to find cross-border e-solutions that would cover the whole region,” stated Foreign Minister Paet.
