Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Egypt Must Hold New Elections and Get a Civilian Government as Soon as Possible

At a meeting of the European Union foreign ministers in Brussels today, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that Egypt must organise new elections and have a civilian government come into power as soon as possible.

Paet stated that it is in the interest of all of Egypt for all parties to take part in the process of restoring democratic institutions. “The increase in violence in Egypt is quite alarming, and responsibility for preventing it lies with all parties,” he emphasised.

Following the ousting of President Morsi, disturbances and clashes in Egypt have continued. Over 100 people have died.

“The European Union wants to see the violence end and the reconciliation process begin among all the parties. Movement towards democratic processes and civil authorities is extremely important,” said the Estonian foreign minister.

The foreign minister also noted that Egypt’s economy is in a vulnerable state and in other to avoid negative consequences, Estonia supports the European Union continuing to give Egypt economic aid. “But it must be based on the desire of the Egyptian authorities to take steps towards reviving the economy,” he added.
