Estonia Supports Palestinian Refugees

02.10.2013

The Foreign Ministry has decided to support the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, Estonia highly values the work of UNRWA. “Thus far, a solution has not been found for the problems of the Palestinian refugees and those people continue to need the support and attention of the international community,” said Paet. UNRWA protects and speaks for more than 5 million refugees in the Near East. “For this reason, Estonia has decided to contribute to assist the Palestinian refugees through the UN aid agency,” he declared.

Foreign Minister Paet says that Estonia supports a two-state solution, in other words the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. "A solution can only be reached through direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine. Hopefully, the negotiations which resumed in July will lead to the lasting solution,” he noted.

Since 1950, UNRWA has spoken for, and provided assistance to, the Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied Palestinian territory. Assistance provided by the organization includes: food, healthcare, and education as well as the ensuring and repairing of infrastructure. UNRWA’s activity depends almost entirely on voluntary donations.

In 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will support the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East with 70,000 Euros.
