Estonian Ambassador to Cyprus Presented His Credentials

05.11.2013

On 4 November, Estonian Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus presented his credentials to the President Nicos Anastasiades. Ambassador Rava resides in Athens and is also Estonia’s new ambassador to Greece and Albania.

In the conversation that followed the ceremony of presenting credentials, Ambassador Margus Rava said that Estonia and Cyprus are two small countries that, besides sharing European values, are also connected by their experiences of overcoming economic difficulties. Estonia values Cyprus’ efforts to solve the financial crisis and implement reforms that support economic growth. Rava also named three very clear examples of close economic cooperation between the two states. “Firstly, more than ten thousand Estonian tourists visit the Mediterranean shores of Cyprus annually. Secondly, the Convention for the Avoidance of Double Taxation has come into force lately. Thirdly, Cyprus is currently the number one destination for Estonian direct investments abroad,” added Rava.

Rava also expressed that Estonia hopes the negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem will progress soon with a view to achieving a fair, comprehensive and viable settlement within the UN framework.

Margus Rava was born in Tallinn in 1964. In 1989, he graduated from the Tallinn Polytechnical Institute as an electronic engineer and in 1992, from the Estonian School of Diplomacy. In 1991, Margus Rava began to work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the press and information department. From 1994 to 1997 he worked as a political affairs diplomat in the Embassy of Estonia in Riga and from 2000 to 2002 he was an economic affairs diplomat in the Embassy of Estonia in London. From 2002-2006 Margus Rava was the Foreign Ministry’s Director General of the external economic and development cooperation department. From 2006 to 2010 Rava was the Ambassador of Estonia to France and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Estonia to UNESCO. From the fall of 2010 until his departure for Greece, Margus Rava was the Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large for Energy and Climate Affairs.
