Estonia Established Diplomatic Relations with Republic of Palau

08.11.2013

Today, 8 November, Ambassador of Estonia to Japan Toivo Tasa and Ambassador of the Republic of Palau to Japan Francis Mariur Matsutaro signed a joint communiqué which established diplomatic relations between Estonia and the Republic of Palau.

After the signing ceremony, which took place at the Embassy of Estonia, the ambassadors of Estonia and Palau exchanged thoughts regarding the development of bilateral relations, including in the fields of science, education, and e-governance, as well as about cooperation in international organisations and environmental problems.

The Republic of Palau is one of the youngest and least populated countries in the world. Palau gained independence and joined the UN in 1994. In the UN, Estonia and Palau are connected by, among other things, their mutual participation in the Forum of Small States (FOSS).

The Republic of Palau is located in the Pacific Ocean in the western end of the Caroline Islands of Micronesia and is made up of more than 340 islands, 8 of which are inhabited. More and more Estonians, especially nature tourists and those interested in open sea diving, have found their way to the archipelago.
