UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Visit Estonia

On 15-16 November, Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon will be on an official visit to Estonia with his wife Ban Soon-taek.

The UN Secretary-General is scheduled to meet with President of the Republic Toomas Hendrik Ilves, President of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma, Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, and Foreign Minister Urmas Paet.

Topics of discussion include international security issues, the role of the United Nations in managing crises in the Middle East and North Africa, frozen conflicts, and supporting Afghanistan.

Additionally, ensuring post-conflict peace and fighting against impunity, including the role of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in that process, will be discussed. The role of the UN in the field of development cooperation and Millennium Development Goals will also be talked about.

Furthermore, cyber security, internet governance, internet freedom, and Estonia’s e-experience in general will be discussed.

Finally, Estonia’s activities in the UN, including as a member of the Human Rights Council, will come under discussion.

The UN Secretary-General and Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will each give a speech and answer questions at the Tallinn University.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is also scheduled to visit and give a speech at Robotex 2013, the Baltic States’ largest robotics competition, which is taking place at the Tallinn University of Technology. Additionally, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Mrs. Ban Soon-taek will also be introduced to Tallinn’s Old Town.
