Estonian Citizens Can Travel to Thailand Visa-Free Starting 24 January 2014

02.01.2014

On 25 December, the domestic procedure to grant Estonian citizens visa-free travel to Thailand was concluded and the Thai government decision will come into effect on 24 January 2014. Beginning on that date, Estonians can travel to Thailand for tourist purposes without obtaining a visa and may stay there for up to thirty consecutive days.

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, years of effort have gone into obtaining visa freedom from Thailand. “In addition to developing tourism, visa freedom will certainly also provide a stronger boost to economic and cultural ties,” noted Paet. “Thailand is a popular tourism destination for Estonians and visa freedom will help to develop interpersonal contacts and tourism relations,” he stated.

Estonian and Thai businesses could also collaborate more closely in the tourism field, according to Foreign Minister Paet. “It is positive that interest towards the Baltic Sea region has grown,” he added.

On 27 August 2013, the decision to abandon visa requirements for Estonian citizens in the near future was made at a cabinet session of the Thai government. Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul notified Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet about the decision at a meeting in Tallinn on 7 September 2013.

The Thai interior minister signed the visa freedom decision on 7 November 2013 and the official announcement was made public on 25 December 2013. With this step, the Thai domestic procedure reached an end. The visa freedom will take effect 30 days after the official announcement, on 24 January 2014.
