Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will discuss the situation in Ukraine with EU counterparts in Brussels tomorrow

20.02.2014

On February 20, at an extraordinary meeting of the European Union foreign ministers, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will discuss the political conflict in Ukraine and the possible ways in which the European Union can help Ukraine find a solution to the current situation.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that the situation in Ukraine is very difficult. “We cannot tolerate violence in the heart of Europe. The confrontation must be stopped,” Paet emphasized.  “We need to help Ukraine out of this crisis. Effective dialogue through a neutral mediator is essential for finding sustainable solutions. The European Union must also be ready to take on the role of mediator,” he added.

Paet said that Estonia is ready to support punitive measures against those responsible for the violence. He added that in particular, opportunities need to be found in order to help stabilise the situation in Ukraine.
