Foreign minister Urmas Paet: the need to strengthen European energy security has increased rapidly

18.03.2014

At the European Union foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, where EU energy policy and energy security were discussed with the European Commission’s Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger, foreign minister Urmas Paet emphasized the need for the rapid strengthening of energy security.

"In terms of energy policy, the first priority must be diversification of energy supply sources and the creation of new energy connections between EU Member States," Paet said. "It is also important to enhance energy security cooperation between neighbouring European Union countries and strategic partners, as well as between EU institutions," he added.

According to Paet, the connecting of Estonian and Finnish gas grids and construction of LNG terminals are essential for energy security.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the discussion on energy policy focused on global energy development and relations with major producers, whose choices have a direct impact on the European Union. "If Russia is using energy as a political tool, the European Union must ensure the diversification of energy supply sources," foreign minister Urmas Paet said. "The new action plan is essential in order to reduce the EU's dependency on energy producers and to strengthen the European Union's energy security," Paet said. Foreign minister Paet stated that the importance of the Southern Corridor and the projects there is increasing, which will help reach suppliers in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region.
Paet added that the European Union's Eastern Partners must be supported. "We need to support Ukraine in reforming its energy market and infrastructure," Paet said.

The European Union Council of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is ready to assist Ukraine in securing its energy supply through diversification, energy efficiency and by creating efficient links with the EU.
