Estonia recognised the Netherlands for its contribution to security in the Baltic Sea Region

30.04.2014

Upon meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans in Tallinn, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet expressed appreciation for the Netherlands' contribution to the security of the Baltic Sea region. "The Netherlands is participating in the 2017 Baltic Air Policing rotation and is ready to contribute to the security of the Baltic countries with air and naval forces. The Netherlands also participated in NATO's Steadfast Jazz exercise last fall," Foreign Minister Paet said. In addition, the Netherlands also participates in the work of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre.

The Estonian and Dutch Foreign Ministers spoke about European security and developments in Ukraine. "The international community must keep Russia away from interfering in the affairs of eastern Ukraine; this can be achieved by taking a very clear and unequivocal position, which needs to extend beyond the European Union and the United States," Foreign Minister Paet emphasised.
Everything related to freedom of the Internet is of great importance for both Estonia and the Netherlands. "For us, it is important that the notion of the possibility of the Internet being simultaneously free and secure reaches places that are geographically far from the trans-Atlantic sphere," Foreign Minister Paet said. The Netherlands is the founder of the international contact group for Internet freedom. Estonia is the current chair of the Freedom Online Coalition.

On the topic of bilateral relations between Estonia and the Netherlands, Paet and Timmermans expressed satisfaction that bilateral economic relations are strong. The Netherlands is the ninth most important trading partner for Estonia and the third largest foreign investor. "There are undoubtedly even more untapped opportunities to further promote business contacts," Foreign Minister Paet added.
