Estonia is ready to help flood-ravaged Serbia

22.05.2014

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia is ready to help Serbia in the aftermath of widespread flooding, which has led to the country declaring a state of emergency. “I express my condolences to those close to the people killed in the floods. We have informed Serbia of our preparedness to send an Estonian rescue team to their country in this instance of exceptional flooding, if our help is needed,” Paet said.

The Foreign Ministry is ready to finance sending a rescue mission to Serbia with funds from its humanitarian aid budget.

A part of Serbia is flooded due to heavy rains and on May 15 a state of emergency was declared throughout the country. Also, many households are flooded or in danger of becoming submerged. The water has made many roads impassable and rail traffic has stopped on many routes.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that Serbia has decided to call on the European Civil Protection Mechanism to help with accessing high-power water pumps. “This is the call for help which Estonia is ready to answer,” Paet added.
