26.05.2014

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said at his meeting in Kyiv today with acting President of Ukraine and Speaker of Parliament Oleksandr Turchynov, that Estonia fully supports Ukraine’s democratic reforms and the Ukrainian people’s right to decide their own future. "The presidential elections on Sunday are of key significance," he said.

"Ensuring the security situation is the main task.Unfortunately, the elections are being held in difficult circumstances given what is happening in Eastern and Southern Ukraine and that is why we recognise the efforts of Ukraine in carrying out democratic and transparent elections all the more,” he added.

Turchynov thanked Estonia for all its comprehensive support. Paet stated that Estonia is ready to fully support reforms in Ukraine and to share its experience.

According to Paet, Estonia has sent two long-term and six short-term observers to various regions in Ukraine to observe the presidential elections as part of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) observation mission."We have also sent four people to the special mission of the OSCE, an expert to the European Union's representative office in Kiev and deployed additional diplomats to our embassy," Paet said. He added that Estonia has also contributed to the OSCE special mission with 40 000 euros.
