Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus to the Finnish Foreign Minister: Finland is a good and important partner for Estonia

10.04.2015

At today’s meeting with Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja in Helsinki, Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus stressed that Finland is an important partner for Estonia on both the regional level and in the European Union as well as on a wider international level. “We highly appreciate our cooperation with Finland in the areas of economy and energy, as well as in key foreign policy issues,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said.

At their meeting, the foreign ministers discussed economic issues and initiatives taken in the fields of common e-services and the data sharing between the two countries. “Finland has a long history as Estonia's largest trading partner and Finland continues to be the top foreign travel destination for the Estonian population,” the Foreign Minister said. “The two societies are increasingly interconnected, which is why we look forward to the increased development of common e-services,” she added.

The foreign ministers agreed that intense cooperation is extremely necessary in order to guarantee the region’s energy security. “We consider it essential that construction of the gas pipeline Balticconnector connecting Finnish and Estonian gas networks and the regional LNG terminal begin as soon as possible,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus added.

The Foreign Minister also expressed interest in participating in the Finnish Arctic Council and expressed hope for Estonia being granted observer status in the future. “Observer status in the Arctic Council would give Estonia the opportunity to contribute to the preservation of the Arctic environment along with the Nordic countries and would also provide additional research opportunities for Estonian scientists,” the Foreign Minister said. Finland will take over the Presidency of the Arctic Council in the spring of 2017.

At their meeting, the foreign ministers also discussed the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.

From Helsinki, the Foreign Minister will continue on to Latvia, where she will meet with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs. This is the Foreign Minister’s traditional visit to neighbouring countries following the inauguration of the new government.
