Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus: Russia has used the ceasefire to take heavy weapons and troops into Ukraine

14.05.2015

Today at the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission in Antalya, foreign ministers jointly condemned Russia’s ongoing support of separatists in Ukraine. The joint statement adopted at the meeting calls on Russia to immediately stop political, military and financial support of the separatists. The foreign ministers welcomed Ukraine’s steps in carrying out constitutional reforms.

“Respect for Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity is a prerequisite for resolving the conflict. This also explicitly includes Crimea. Ukraine needs to regain control of its borders,” Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus emphasized. “The complete implementation of the Minsk Agreements is necessary, but there is clear evidence that Russia has used the ceasefire to transport additional heavy weapons and soldiers into Ukraine’s territory. We must be consistent and unwavering in our policies, to maintain pressure on Russia,” she added.

Following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, NATO has significantly stepped up cooperation with Ukraine in the fields of defence and security. Estonia's support for Ukraine has doubled since the crisis broke out in 2014. Estonia's assistance in the medical field, in supporting internally displaced persons and in strengthening cybersecurity is noteworthy.

According to Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus, the support of NATO, the European Union and partners to Ukraine strengthens the security of all of Europe. “A democratic, modern and Western-oriented Ukraine is the most steadfast response to aggression. We understand from our own experience that implementing reforms can be complex, but without reforms, the situation will not improve. We trust the Ukrainian leadership to continue on this chosen path,” the minister said.
