Estonian classical music at the Vale of Glamorgan Music Festival in Wales

Today the contact event “Estonia - A music powerhouse”, introducing Estonian classical music will take place in Cardiff, Wales. This is the second such event in the UK during the past year.

An event dedicated to the 80th birthday of Arvo Pärt within the framework of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, will be opened by the Estonian Ambassador to the UK Lauri Bambus along with renowned Welsh composer Peter Reynolds.

The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra will perform as part of the contact event. Estonian composers Helena Tulve, Tõnu Kõrvits and Märt-Matis Lill will speak about Estonian music and their own works with the help of moderator Peter Reynolds. In addition, also travelling to Cardiff to introduce Estonian music will be representative from the Estonian Music Development Centre, the Estonian Music Information Centre and the Pille Lill Music Fund.

According to the event’s co-organizer, cultural counsellor to the embassy Kristel Oitmaa, the event was deliberately planned to coincide with the program of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival taking place May 12 to 23, where Estonian music will be performed and Estonian musicians will give a total of three concerts. Oitmaa says Arvo Pärt and his works are very well-known in Great Britain and the festival provides an excellent opportunity to introduce the works of our other composers.

“The success of Estonian music in Wales is once again proof that Estonian musicians are internationally highly recognized,” Ambassador Bambus noted. “The Embassy in London is always delighted to contribute to helping to introduce Estonian music in the UK.”

During his visit, Ambassador Bambus will meet with representatives of the Welsh Government and Parliament, as well as with the Mayor of Cardiff. The Estonian Ambassador will also give a lecture on the subject of Estonia at the University of Cardiff.

The Estonian classical music contact event is being sponsored by the Estonian Embassy in London, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Culture, the Estonian Music Development Centre and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
