Pentus-Rosimannus on security: We must focus on prevention rather than prediction

08.06.2015

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus stressed the significance of allied presence in our region while speaking to think-tankers and ambassadors in Washington this morning. Pentus-Rosimannus said that the visible presence on land, on the sea and in the air “sent our people a clear and reassuring message of solidarity and support”.

She added that thinking more seriously on deterrence is a must and focusing on prevention rather than prediction needed. “We need to make sure that our own capabilities along NATO’s eastern border are and remain credible,” said the minister.

Speaking about the Russia-Ukraine conflict Pentus-Rosimannus warned against giving up on finding a political solution. She stressed that “the sanctions against Russia must remain in place until the Minsk agreements are fulfilled and Ukraine has regained control over its eastern border.”

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus spoke at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) today focusing mainly on the security situation in Europe in light of the crisis in Ukraine. Other subjects of discussion were cyber issues, energy security and TTIP.

The Foreign Minister is visiting the United States from June 6 – 10. She met with the Estonian community in New York this weekend as well as with representatives of the New York Estonian School. In addition to the CEPA event she will be meeting with Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Senator Ron Johnson and security policy focused think-tankers. She will return to New York on June 9 for meetings with representatives of the UN. Minister Pentus-Rosimannus will arrive in Estonia on June 11.
