Estonian Foreign Minister Hails Release of Opposition Leader in Burma/Myanmar

15.11.2010

No. 354-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet hailed the release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma/Myanmar on Saturday and emphasised the necessity of releasing other political prisoners being held by the junta.

Foreign Minister Paet expressed hope that new restrictions would not be placed upon released Burma/Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. “It is very important to ensure freedom of movement and speech for Aung San Suu Kyi, a symbol of the democratic movement for Burma/Myanmar and the whole world. For the sake of Burma/Myanmar’s movement towards democracy, it is also important that Aung San Suu Kyi is allowed full participation in his country’s political processes,” stated Foreign Minster Paet.

Paet emphasised the need to release other political prisoners being held by the Burma/Myanmar junta. “Then the nation will be able to truly begin the transition to democracy,” he added.
