Estonia Feels Giving Candidate State Status to Montenegro Is Essential

No. 400-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet expressed his satisfaction over the decision made at the European Union summit today to give Montenegro the status of a European Union candidate state.

Paet stated that Estonia has clearly supported Montenegro’s movement towards the European Union. “Montenegro has made sufficient progress in meeting the Copenhagen criteria, and its success must be recognised. This decision also reinforces the trustworthiness of the European Union’s enlargement policy,” said Paet. “In June of 2006 Estonia was the first nation in the world to establish diplomatic ties with the Republic of Montenegro. We are ready to support Montenegro as it makes further reforms as well,” he added.

Granting candidate status to Montenegro officially opens up the opportunity for Montenegro to begin accession negotiations with the European Union.
